COUNCILWOMAN VAL APPLEWHITE ANNOUNCES CANDIDACY FOR NC HOUSE DISTRICT 44

FAYETTEVILLE, NC.   Fayetteville City Councilwoman, Valencia “Val” Applewhite, announced today that she will run for the North Carolina House of Representatives in District 44. Applewhite will also seek the Democratic Party appointment to serve out the remainder of Representative Margaret Dickson's term, pending her resignation to assume her role as our new State Senator.  Applewhite is currently serving her second term as a city councilwoman representing District 7.   She was first elected to council in 2007 when she defeated eight-term incumbent Curtis Worthy.  She was unopposed in the last election.

“After much encouragement from family, friends and people throughout our community, I have decided to run for the North Carolina State House to represent District 44" said Applewhite. She added, "Cumberland County and North Carolina are facing challenging times and we need fresh leadership in Raleigh that can see the big picture from the local perspective. I know that I can represent the best interest of the people of District 44 and I can assure them that I will work hard for them every single day.”

After 20 years of service with the United States Air Force, Val and her husband Ken chose Fayetteville as a place to begin new careers and raise their two children, Joseph and Damani, both students in the Cumberland County school system.  “I love my community and I have always been motivated to serve whether it be in uniform, on our city council, or as a volunteer for our local  PTA” Applewhite said.   “I’m going to Raleigh to advocate for working families like my own to ensure effective schools, job growth in our community, and safe neighborhoods for our children and families.   In every decision I make, I will always put our local families first.”
